Homemade china set shows value of ceramic hobby

(by SN Janet Willard)
Are you sitting at home with
"nothing to do?" There are many ac-
tivities you could get involved in.
Here's one lady who has selected
ceramics as an interesting, crea-
tive and money-saving hobby.
Linda Baker has found that the
ceramics shon can provide many use-
ful and interesting hours. At first
it may seem like there is nothing to
do on base except go to the club and
that gets boring, but when you look
around you find there's really a lot
to do.
Linda rarely buys any ceramic
piece as she can just go out and
make one like it. She says, "I
like ceramics but I'm not going to
pay $65 for it when I can make it
for a fraction of the cost. She
makes many items for presents:
birthday, anniversary, wedding, or
something for someone in the hos-
pital. She said, "it's a lot
cheaper than buying gifts and it's
something I created personally for
them. People know you didn't Just
go out and buy it—you put a lot of
hours and energy into it."
Also she said they have
sentimental value. "Maybe one day
my daughters' children will ask,
'Where did you buy that?' and they
can tell them your grandmother made
it."
ve fun
Linda says anybody can do
it. Anybody can pour the slip.
It's when that's over that your
creativity starts. "The piece is
yours and you can add your own in-
dividual designs and colors to it."
Linda said she enjoyed art in
high school. She said one
teacher gave her an A and she
was the first student to get an A
from that teacher. She also won a
drawing contest, a scholarship to
an Art School, but decided against
it at the time.
She says ceramics is a
great hobby and one really doesn't
need to be an artist to enjoy it.
When I asked her if she could make
a living out of ceramics she re-
plied, "Well, my husband and I would
like to open our own shop when he
retires from the military in two
years. But, if there are too many
other ceramic shops around I'll
find something else to do."
So, if you are bored and looking
for something to do, try your local
hobby shop. Ceramics might Just be
the thing you've been looking for.
