fjord 1200 z, at 6452/3000: Ice visible 6515/
3100 extending- NE as far as can be seen.
3/g M/s Tröllafoss, 1200 z: Last night sighted
four big icebergs at 5652/3945, one at 5757/
3742 and one at 5805/3739. Several small blocks
around the big ones.
3/a M/g Snæfell, 1800 z, at position 36 miles
magnetic NNW from Cape Ritur: An unbroken
ice field as far as sighted between NNW and
N. Scattered blocks to the SW of the ice field.
4/g A 60 miles long ice edge is reported
about 30 miles N of Cape Straumnes.
B/5 An irregular ice boundary with many
bights and broad bays is extending lrom 6400/
3630 to 6700/2700 to 6730/2400 to 7030/1900.
Distance from Straumnes about 70 miles. yVlong
the Greenland coast a 60 miles broad belt of
O. 9—1.0 coverage is extending from 70° 30' N
to Angmagsalik. South of Angmagsalik a nar-
row belt of close drift ice is extending along
the coast leaving the water area of Ikerssuaq
open.
°/g TF-IST en route for S-Strömfjord re-
ports the outer limit of ice floe 35 miles off
Angmagsalik.
b/5 M/g Godafoss 2007 z: A big ice block
sighted at 5633/3740.
°/g The boundary of drift ice is oscillating
between 30—35 miles off Cape Straumnes and
40—45 miles off Cape Bardi.
ii—i5/g Reports from S/T Geir (Captain G.
Audunsson): n/g. A close belt of drift ice en-
countered at 6250/4000, sailing along it course
38° true to 6405/3725.
12/g A close ice field, 20 to 40 miles broad,
beginning at 6522/3334 extending in direction
82° true to 6542/2754. About 5 miles south of
this margin some scattered strips of ice were
extending southward as far as sighted.
13/g From position 6542/2754 a scattered ice
belt is extending in direction N 55° E ending
at 25 miles ancl 315° true off Cape Straumnes.
15/g Fishing 20—30 miles NW of Cape
Straumnes. The ice has drifted seaward and no
ice is visible.
The wind has been NE-erly, light to mode-
rate, ancl visibilty good.
15/g An airplane reports a large iceberg at
5900/4145.
ic/g The ice pack boundary extended out
from the Greenland coast to within 40 miles of
Isafjordur. The concentration of the ice pack
was generally 0.9 to 1.0, consisting of small and
medium floes accompanied by a lesser portion
of slush, brash ancl block.
Just north of open water between the ice
pack boundary and Isafjorclur an ice belt of 0.4
concentration, 1 /g mile wide and 26 miles long
was extending from 6713/2245 to 6658/2200.
The main boundary of the ice pack was pas-
sing through the íollowing coordinates. From
7030/1935 to 6900/2115 to 6843/2120 to 6707/
2410 to 6655/2335 to 6632/2800 to 6635/2927
to 6600/2900 to 6605/3205 thence in a SW-erly
direction to 6530/(3330).
Concentration at the ice boundary varied be-
tween 0.4 and 0.6. Extencling south ancl west
of the outer boundary was an ice belt of 0.2
slush, brash and block. This belt, with a width
of 7 miles, commenced at 6553/2900 on the
western side and terminated at 6545/2705.
20/g The general appearance of the ice mar-
gin was jaggecl and protruding causing many
bights, bays ancl points. Commencing at 6807 /
2220 it was running to 6735/2240 to 6702/2430
to 6618/2440 to 6617/2635 turning south to
6605/2635 returning west to 6550/2850 thence
south to 6532/2850 to 6455/2940 the last point
of observation.
From all appearance the ice pack was com-
mencing its summer breakup. However, the
open water area between Isafjordur and the ice
boundary has decreased to 40 miles.
A 3—8 miles broad belt of 0.7 concentration
was extending, within the main boundary, from
6630/2430 to 6705/2230 at a distance of 30
miles off Cape Straumnes.
3°/. M/g Ægir 1200 z: The main ice edge is
35 miles NW of Cape Kögur, extending toward
ENE (66°) as far as sighted.
JUNE 1958.
The average clistance of tlie ice boundary
from Cape Straumnes was about 50 miles witli
nearest approach of 20 to 30 miles.
3/o An ice field 75 miles long, 30 miles wide
extending NE to SW was reported by an air-
plane (PAA) from pos. 5830/4200.
4/o A very irregular ancl broken ice bound-
ary was running from 6900/2000 to 6815/2130
to 6730/2130 to 6722/2035 to 6650/2110 to
