land site. In volume 3 of Archaeologia
Islandica, two such sites were re-exam-
ined and questions raised over the origi-
nal interpretation. Such re-appraisals are
both more difficult and easier the older
the excavation is. They are more difficult
because primary archives are often lost,
fragmented or incoherent. They are easier
however, because the author is usually
dead and there is little risk of offence.
Many more recent published excavations
ought also to be justifiably subject to
scrutiny and critique, though understand-
ably, there is a reluctance to do so public-
ly. One can only hope that future archae-
ologists will look back at such work as
critically as Hoegsberg has done to an 80
year old excavation in his contribution to
this issue.
