pieces of steatite which he considered to
be parts of the architectural omaments of
the church and four or five narwhal skulls
which he did not, however, believe to be
from the Norse period (Nordisk Tidsskrift
for Oldkyndighed vol. II, 318-19).
During the later part of the 19th
century much important work took place
in Greenland, particularly the two explor-
atory travels in the area of the Eastem
Settlement undertaken by Gustav Holm
in 1880 and Daniel Bruun in 1894. Both
visited Igaliku, and Holm also drew up a
new plan of the ruin group, but he did not
do any archaeological work (Holm 1882).
By the time Daniel Bruun made his jour-
ney, the Danish National Museum had
taken an interest in the Norse ruins and
