SALMON AND TROUTIN ICELAND
Editor’s Note
This volume of the Journal of Agricultural
Research in Iceland contains a collection of
papers of original research on salmon and
trout in Iceland. They are published as a
unit in spite of the diversified subject
matter because all studies are directed to-
ward two cardinal questions; viz., how to
manage existing salmonid fisheries to
reach desired goals, and how to increase
production beyond existing environmen-
tal constraints.
This has been the main task of the In-
stitute of Freshwater Fisheries since its
founding in 1946, and the studies insti-
gated under a UNDP/FAO project in-
itiated in 1974 must be seen against this
background. My main concern was to in-
troduce some new techniques and equip-
ment developed for salmon research on
the Pacific side of North America, which
would contribute to the solution of man-
agement and production problems of the
Icelandic freshwater fisheries.
The foreign experts provided under the
project all hailed from the College of
Fisheries, University of Washington, in
Seattle, Washington, save one from the
University of Oslo, Norway. They were
engaged on a temporary, short-term basis
during the summer months. The success-
ful completion of the instigated field ap-
plications therefore rested with the Di-
rector and staff and with the financial
backing of the Institute of Freshwater
Fisheries of Iceland.

the basis of annual progress reports, ex-
cept for a few articles written specifically
to complete the study. Completion of the
volume was financed in full by Iceland.
