to question. Also during this period, the
mode of catch changed from trapping and
netting to rod ftshing, and the construc-
tion of the first dam was initiated at Ár-
baer. There are three documentary
periods. Documentary period one covers
the years 1925-1955 during which the
Reykjavík Electrical Co. assumed respon-
sibility for the fishery. Dramatic changes
in the quality of record keeping occurred
as a result of this assumption. A fish trap
was installed to capture fish for trucking
around the dam and a commerical re-
moval policy was established in 1931. By
the provisions of this agreement, 100% of
the first thousand fish trapped, 80% ofthe
second thousand, 60% of the third
thousand, 40% of the fourth thousand and
zero percent of all thousands thereafter
were to be trucked above the dam. The
rest could be removed and sold (Arni Ola
1961). In actual practice, the commercial
removals were more strongly tempered
by, and proportional to, the estimated
strength of the run than by this agree-
