files. Figure 1 shows the interactions of the
files and programs. The program system
is written in FORTRAN IV for an IBM
360/30 machine. The two disk files
(MARK/LOTF) are Direct Access files
and are organized as list structures with
pointer arrays (Fig. 2).
MARKF — The tagging file
This file is a multi-year file and contains
all information on the individual tagged
smolts released, their tag number, length
(mm), lot number (treatment group), age,
and date tagged. The entire file is stored
on disk, and so far 5 years are present on
the Institute disk (IBM-type 2311). The
program MLOAD loads each year’s
tagging information from cards. It also
deletes obsolete years and can correct the
file.
RECAPF — The recapture file
This card file records data on all fish
returning to the hatchery, tagged and
untagged (Fig. 3a). The program RE-
CAPT uses this file as input and sum-
marizes the run on a daily, veekly, and
total basis, performs a length/weight cor-
relation analysis, and tabulates length
and weight distributions (Fig. 3b).
LOTF — The lot file
This file contains all release and recapture
information on each lot (treatment group)
of Carlin-tagged fish. It is a multi-year
disk file and is maintained by the prog-
rams MLOAD and LCREAT which use
as input the two files MARKF and RE-
CAPF. A third program, LOTST, oper-
ates on LOTF, giving a summary, for eacli
treatment group, of the annual and total
return and the correlation of number re-
turned vs. length at tagging (Fig. 4).
MICF — The micro-tag file
This filc has not been introduced, but it
will contain release and return informa-
tion for each treatment group of microtag-
ged fish, similar to LOTF for Carlin-tag-
ged fish.
DISCUSSION
This filing system, established for Kollaf-
jördur, has already proven itself as a
speedy and accurate method of gathering
and summarizing data from the hatchery.
As the hatchery operation expands, the
system is indispensable in making possi-
ble an evaluation ofthe accumulated data.
The file has the advantage of flexibility
and it can interact with selected prog-
rams, such as RECAPT snd LOTST, or
the file records can be used as input for
package programs, such as SPSS, for more
complicated analyses of data.
