stream there is a circulation system which
will return the salmon after 1 year’s feed-
ing in the sea, or 2 if the current branch
which swings over to Norway is followed
(Fig. 10). The feeding area in this would
be largely the Polar front vacated by the
disappearance of the Atlanto-Scandian
stock of herring. The mixing of cold Arctic
and warm Atlantic water provides the im-
petus for rich food production, as is the
case in the Denmark Strait.
The hypotheses set forth here are still
largely conjectures but could be verified
easily by tagging experiments. Feeding
salmon should be caught easily with drift
longlines with a short ganion about 1 m
long. But the knowledge gained
elsewhere, especially in the North Pacific
Ocean, and the natural explanation of the
predominance of 1-ocean salmon in the

Laxveiðin á íslandi er fyrst og fremst
stangaveiði. Þar af leiðir að aðalhlutverk
veiðiyfirvalda er ekki að ná veiðiálagi sem
gefur hámarksafrakstur í laxaíjölda hel-
dur að halda ánægju veiðimanna í
hámarki. Þess vegna.verður alltaf að vera
verulega meiri laxafjölda í ánni eftir veiði-

The fact that Iceland possesses two
close natural current systems for salmon
production holds the greatest promise for
the future of ocean ranching. Coupled
with this is the disappearance or presently
low abundance of other species like herr-
ing which formerly utilized the same
feeding areas.
Conceivably there is no real limit to the
magnitude of the production except those
imposed by market conditions, availa-
bility of smolts, and capital for invest-
ments. In spite of these constraints, Ice-
land has the possibility and opportunity
not only to be among the foremost ocean
ranching nations in the world but to re-
move the salmon production from the
category of luxury item to that of a food
supply of great dimensions.

sem veiðileyfi eru seld löngu fyrir veið-
itíma, en þetta kemur ekki að sök þar sem
