ReLATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TRANSCRIPTS
Jon Eggertsson wrote the correct text for Heimskringla, but The Great-
est Saga of Olafr Ttyggvason (GOT) has dana ok svia. On fol. 74V
(HkrFJ II: 62, v. 34), Jon incorrectly wrote myir blas, where Åsgeir
Jonsson wrote myre blas in AM36 fol. GuSmundur Olafsson correctly
changed Jon’s form to myre blas, and this correction was adopted in Pe-
ringskiold’s edition, but the text here has nevertheless gone wrong in
that the corrupted form is not cancelled. The textual basis for this cor-
rection may be Bergsbok (or another manuscript of Olaf s saga). In the
fifth line of verse 118 (HkrFJ II: 398), fol. 157V, GuSmundur corrects
fa to Sd in agreement with SOH in Holm.perg. 2 4to (fol. 57r), 68 and
73 (Sig I: 324 v. 7).
In several places GuSmundur has corrected verses omitted or cor-
rupted by Jon (or transmitted defeetively through Kringla). On fol. 2jr
(HkrFJ I: 215, v. 91.1) he has added bitri, which is missing in Kringla (in
both 321 and 35); the verse is not included in Peder Claussøn’s trans-
lation or in Husafellsbék, but it is found in GOT,104 and the basis for
this correction is probably Bergsbok or a transcript thereof. In verse 80
(fol. 96c HkrFJ II: 178) GuSmundur has added three words missing
in Kringla: pipzr zfpinni. This correction also agrees with Bergsbok and
other manuscripts.
On fol. 79V (HkrFJ II: 90.11) Jon has omitted just under one line of
text. It may have been difficult to read in the exemplar, for he has left
space in the transcript for what is missing. There is, however, nothing
to suggest that Åsgeir Jonsson had trouble reading the text. In the mar-
gin GuSmundur has supplied the omission from another manuscript:
“ex alio Mfc. yfir hinn nerpr a. lut, enn Hr oa skidlgayfir hinn Eyjlra lut.”
This reading may be from SOH, but it is not from Bergsbok.105
