from the same year was employed at the Swedish College of Antiqui-
ties, TorSur Porkelsson Vfdalfn (matriculated 1680), who helped J. G.
Sparfwenfeldt in 1682 with the transcript of Jofraskinna in R 685,119
Isleifur fiorleifsson, who did translation work for the Swedes also
in 1682, and Arni Håkonarson (matriculated 1681), who from 1682
to 1685 was amanuensis to Torfæus. In addition to these Arngrimur
Jonsson was probably active in Copenhagen at the relevant time. Arn-
grimur travelled to Stockholm with Sparfwenfeldt in 1682 to work
for the College of Antiquities, remaining there until his death in 1691
(Schiick 1932-44: II, 93).
It is difficult to imagine that Hannes fiorleifsson would have been
appointed antiquarian to the Danish king had it been known that he
had previously helped the rival Swedes with material, and it is quite
inconceivable that he could have helped them after being appointed on
7.6.1681. It is, however, difficult to find good samples of his hånd for
comparison. There is a slip of paper with an annotation in Latin in his
hånd pasted into AM 1264W, dated 5.4.1678. A comparison with the
marginal annotations in Latin in 18(1) shows no points of similarity.
Hannes’s handwriting is thinner and slants more towards the right.
It is easier to find samples of Arngrimur Jonsson’s hånd. There are
several documents in his hånd in Stockholm (Holm.papp. 56, 62, 88
fol), and the handwriting is in faet not unlike 18(1)/^y(i). Particularly
alike is the handwriting on the first written page in 88 (Ggngu-Hrolfs
saga) and 37 respectively, where the scribe has taken especial pains.
Small details, however, weigh against identifying the two hånds as one
and the same.120 Nor is it GuSmundur Olafsson’s hånd. He had in any
