The British-inspired Frog pubs have been a huge success across the channel. Icelander Thor Ragnarsson together with his univer- sity friend Paul Chantler came up with the idea, for their business school project, of a British pub serving real beer in the French capital. They received such excellent marks that the pubs became a reality, with the first, The Frog and Rosbif, opening in 1993. Its success was followed by The Frog and Princess in the Latin Quarter of Paris, as well as branches in Toulouse and Bordeaux. The latest addition is in the charming new Paris “quartier” of Bercy Village, aptly in the city’s old wine warehouses. The atmosphere at the Frog pubs is always buzzing, come noon or night, and the clientele varies from students to stock brokers. Here you will find the best ale in Paris, brewed in huge copper instruments on site. Varieties are plenty and bear witty names such as Inseine, Parislytic, Dark de Triomphe and Real Blonde. The once-a-week student night offers beer and cocktails at a mere 25 francs, and for those essential not- to-be-missed rugby match- es, giant SKY screens come to the rescue. The food ranges from the classic Ploughman’s lunch, excellent hamburgers, sandwiches and steaks to delicious Thai and Indian dishes. A favourite is the mouth-watering Sunday brunch, a feast of English, Continental or American breakfast accompanied by Bucks Fizz or Bloody Mary. The only obstacle to enjoying this gourmet beverage is that you’re sitting on an aeroplane cruising at an altitude of 30,000 feet. Well, that’s not a problem any more.
