However, the reach of Iceland still extends, especially in Glasgow during the month of October where those friendly Glaswegians can celebrate Iceland Week. Iceland Week is in its second year, and it´s essentially a month of cul- tural events establishing links between Glasgow and Reykjavík. “Mention Iceland to a Glaswegian and you’ll hear them say: ‘I’d love to go to Iceland,’” says David Sanderson Sales Manager for Icelandair in Scotland. “Iceland Week was set up to keep the word of Iceland on the mouths of Glaswegians.” It makes perfect sense to establish closer ties between Scotland and Iceland because of the similarities the countries share. Both are islands. Both have small populations, not to mention the fact that “Glasgow is the closest gateway city to Iceland,” says Sanderson. The list of scheduled events include: a six-week exhibition fea- turing selected Icelandic artists at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (www.cca-glasgow.com). From the art world to the mall, shoppers at Buchanan Galleries, Glasgow's premier shopping mall, will have the chance of winning a luxury trip for two to Iceland between 15-21 October. Perhaps nothing says more about a country than its cuisine. Bring on celebrity chef Siggi Hall who will be preparing Icelandic cuisine in La Bonne Auberge Restaurant, along with the restaurants Gerry Sharkey (www.labonneauberge.co.uk). The Icelandic band SKE will wind down the month with a concert at the Centre for Contemporary Arts. SKE is a seven piece pop art band whose latest album “Life, Death Happiness and Stuff” was nominated for Album of the Year in Iceland 2003.
