Land of
Ice and Fire
This autumn, Iceland Review will take part in the largest exhi-
bition of Icelandic culture to be organised in France. From
September 27 to October 10, a series of exhibitions will be
held in Paris to promote Iceland. The most extensive is
Islande-Terre Vivante, an exposition on the nature, geology,
and technology of Iceland. Taking place at the prestigious
Palais de la Découverte, Terre Vivante offers fascinating
insight into subjects such as hydrogen power, volcanic activi-
ty, marine biology and geothermal heat.
For a closer look at Icelandic music and art, a number of
venues including the Centre George Pompidou, la Musée de la
Photographie, Chez Colette and the FNAC music stores have
exciting events and exhibitions organised. And finally, plunge
into the world of the Icelandic sagas and fairy tales at La
Maison des Écrivains and la Maison des Cultures du Monde.
A special French issue of Iceland Review has been published
to accompany these events. It features a catalogue to the
Islande-Terre Vivante exhibition as well as a range of interest-
ing articles on Iceland, its people and culture. AMB

EXHIBITION OF ICELANDIC CULTURE IN FRANCE

Treasures in France
As the Kárahnjúkar dam project threatens to permanently
change Iceland’s landscape, flooding a large portion of the
country’s interior, the most poignant political art about the
dam is now on display - in France. Rúrí, the renowned
Icelandic artist who presented at the 2003 Venice Arts Festival
and whose sculpture, ‘Rainbow’, greets visitors to the Keflavík
airport, has brought her “Archive - endangered waters” piece
and a related project, “Limpide”, to France for the first time.
Both works use large transparent slides of waterfalls mounted
in a somewhat ominous assembly. Pulling a slide out releases
the sounds of the photographed waterfall. When the slide is
pushed back in the sound dies and one is left looking at the
stainless steel binding of the case.
The powerful multi-media presentations are open to the pub-
lic and free of charge. “Archive-endangered waters” is show-
ing at Passage du Désir and “Limpide” at colette, an empori-
um and gallery that defies explanation. BC
