Thorvaldsen Bar
This bar is where all the wealthy posers hang out.
Half the fun is watching the crowd, most of which
are dressed like they have money to burn and talk-
ing as if they are film producers or stock brokers,
although the most part are lawyers and air host-
esses. Good for making contact with the opposite
sex, especially with divorcées over thirty.

Rex
Formerly a Terence Conran-designed bar, this has
reopened following an extensive facelift. Opulent
baroque-style deco with cool features such as a
peep-show style phone booth, a room full of kas-
bah-like cushions and a selection of cigars in a
special vault. Very trendy, and targeted towards
the over-thirty Prada brigade.

graced the makeshift stage in the “Russia” space.
If you want to find out what’s going on there, ask
someone at Sirkús. But keep in mind, this venue is
for a limited time only. You’ll find it just up from
Hlemmur.

Café Dillon
This little club on the upper part of Laugavegur
commercial district is a perfect spot to drink while
listening to a DJ spin your favorite records of the
80’s and 90’s underground. Every so often, you’ll
find the upstairs turns into a concert loft for
Reykjavík’s underground music of today. This place
is a favourite hangout for a strange mix of locals.
You’ll get everything from older, quiet drunks to the
younger hip crowd who got tired of the ridiculous
queues outside the place further down the street.

Salurinn
This is a music venue to end all music venues and
one of the only places in the country that is actual-
ly dedicated as a performance space, where most
others perform that role second to getting people
drunk. Salurinn is in Kopavogur, which is a family-
oriented city next to Reykjavik. Here you’ll find
slightly more upscale fare, from experimental elec-
tronic concerts organized by the in-house music
students to their series of neo-classical and new
music recitals running from September to May.

Stúdentakjallarinn
The traditional student bar, Studentakjallarinn,
came under new management last spring.
Gunnhildar and Fabrizio brought about revolution-
ary new ideas: the cheapest Happy Hour in
Reykjavík, consistent quality DJs, Wi-Fi, pinball
and no frills live music. Megas performed here –
which makes this bar as authentic as haddock
mashed into potatoes.

Sólon
“Shut up. Just shut up. Shut up.” If you know that
these brilliant lyrics are by Black Eyed Peas then
Sólon is your bar, at least upstairs where you can
also sing along to: “It’s gettin’ hot in here, so take
off all your clothes.” Oh, this bar is also frequent-
ed by mad Frenchmen.
