As I write this I realize that tomorrow,
June 17, I will start my 35th year at
Iceland Review.
Few things give me more pleasure in my
work for this magazine than to meet interest-
ing people. From musician Björk, back in
1982, my first year, to the Icelandic president
elect, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson (page 32),
most recently a few days ago in East Iceland
at a grocery store in Reyðarfjörður. He was
buying a bite to eat with his Canadian-born
wife, business-owner and writer Eliza Reid,
who worked at Iceland Review from 2005 to
2008. Since Guðni was on a campaign tour,
meeting as many voters as possible in a
single day, there was no time for the president-
to-be to sit down at a restaurant only ten days
before the election.
For this issue, I also had the pleasure of
meeting some of the 320 pupils at Fellaskóli
junior and secondary school in Reykjavík’s
Breiðholt suburb (page 44). The students
there speak a total of 25 languages and seven
out of ten have a foreign background.
But I don’t only enjoy meeting new people.
There’s also the challenge of chasing the
midnight sun. For this issue, I returned to
beautiful Bakkafjörður in the northeast and
Vopnafjörður (page 22), in the east. There, I did
not meet a single person—not a single one of
the 1.73 million people (page 78) expected to
visit Iceland this year.
I did see a few goats there, though not the
same goats as are featured in this magazine
(page 64). Those live on Iceland’s largest goat
breeding farm in the west of the country. The
East Iceland goats (too far away to be included
in my landscapes) were possibly dreaming
about a good result for Iceland in the 2016
UEFA European Championship (page 92).
Thirty-four years ago it seemed impossible,
unthinkable, that Iceland, this small island
nation, would ever make it to a major football
championship, let alone to the Round of 16. The
women first qualified for the Euro Cup seven
years ago and now, at last, the men have, too.
They have done much better than expected,
winning one, and drawing two games in the
qualifying round.
Áfram Ísland!
