The Norwegian house, a wooden house built in 1832, was the first
two-story residence in Iceland. Its name derives from the fact that
the wood was imported from Norway. The house was the home
of merchant and politician Árni Ó. Thorlacius (1802–1891) and
his wife Anna M. Steenback (1807–1894) and has been partially
renovated in its original form. The Norwegian house serves as the
regional museum for the Snæfellsnes area, with local items on
display in the attic and rotating exhibitions on the lower level—as
well as a museum shop, featuring Icelandic design, sweets and
products from the region.

With life-size models of 23 whales, including a killer whale,
sperm whale, narwhal, humpback, minke and different species
of dolphins—not to mention a 20-m (66-feet) long replica of a
blue whale, the largest animal on earth—Whales of Iceland is the
biggest whale exhibition in Europe. To educate visitors about the
whales which can be found in Icelandic waters, a biologist was
assigned to create as-accurate-as-possible models of the marine
mammals. Information about the different species can be found on
signs and multimedia screens.
