Specializing in outdoor adven- tures since 2006, the company always puts safety first and quality above quantity. The small firm is family-owned and operated, of- fering snowmobile tours for two to 12 peo- ple at a time, making each trip essentially a private adventure. It’s properly licensed and adheres to all safety requirements. The meeting point is the farm Skálafell, 40 km (25 miles) east of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and equally far west of Höfn í Horna- firði, South Iceland. There, you are provided with waterproof overalls and a helmet, giv- ing you the look of a true adventurer: now you are ready to reach new heights. From here, a super jeep takes you up a road so steep and rugged that you get the feeling you’re in a boat, riding the deepest waves. UPWARD MOBILITY On Vatnajökull glacier, the snowmobiles patiently await you. Once there, you’re giv- en a detailed lesson in basic safety and the operation of the equipment. Even if you’re that rare species who has never been near a snowmobile, or any equipment that op- erates in a similar way, there is no need for concern: Glacier Journey will teach you how to travel in the modern way in minutes. Lucky for you, all the snowmobiles have been modified in order to maximize stability and safety. What follows is an 18 km (11 mile) ride through the vast expanse of Vatnajökull, providing you not only with a spectacular view of some of Iceland’s highest mountain peaks, but also the feeling that your world is vast, with endless adventure in store. The magnificent view of the snow-covered mountains will last you a lifetime. No less importantly, you will feel empowered—for Trust Glacier Journey to take you on the coolest ride ever. HAVE AN ICE TRIP at least an hour. Don’t let your indepen- dent spirit lead you off the track, however, to explore unchartered territory. Here, it’s essential to follow the leader of the group, who knows the glacier like the palm of his/ her hand. HIDDEN TREASURES Visit Glacier Journey on a dark and foggy day and you’ll finally understand what Ice- landic nature is about. Instead of admiring the landscape, you come away from the trip admiring the people who survive in it—your head full of ideas about what may be hidden in the fog. There is no better way to stimulate your imagination. Warm gloves and sunglasses are a must to maximize your pleasure, regardless of the weather. Each tour takes two hours, in- cluding the ride up to the glacier and back. Life is short, so don’t waste it regretting lost opportunities. Who knows when a chance to explore Europe’s largest icecap presents itself again? glacierjourney.is PHOTOS THIS PAGE BY STEPHAN MANTLER.
