Summary
Evaluation of information literacy training
The developing information society requires individuals to
master certain information literacy skills, such as
recognizing when information is needed and the ability to
locate, evaluate and use effectively the information needed.
Information literacy is becoming increasingly important for
academic libraries. They recognise that they must equip
their students with information literacy skills in order to
become life long learners and be successful in the
constantly changing work environment.
The article is based on the author’s master's disserta-
tion, submitted from Loughborough University in 2000. The
aim of the dissertation was to investigate how information
literacy is embedded into the training of undergraduates in
higher education by examining a number of information
literacy teaching initiatives around the world. The final
purpose of the study was to derive a proposal, based on the
findings, for the delivery of information literacy skills in the
University of Akureyri Library (UAL) in Iceland. The met-
hodology consisted of identifying a range of initiatives,
which represent a range of approaches in terms of depth,
comprehensiveness and originality. The ACRL (Association
for College and Research Libraries) Information Literacy
Competency Standards for Higher Education were used to
benchmark, i.e. evaluate and analyse the selected informa-
tion literacy practices.
It was found that a range of approaches are evident,
including those where information literacy skills are taught
in isolation from the subject content or are integrated into
specific courses in the curriculum. Various methods were
identified such as active, collaborative, or problem based
learning to help students to relate the knowledge to real
tasks or situations. In addition it was found that to provide
effective information literacy education, administrative
support as well as staff development, access to appropriate
resources and funding were a necessity. A description of the
implementation process for introducing an information
literacy programme at the UAL is also given.
