The
Cotton
Club
★ ★★
Leikstjórl Francis Coppola. Aðalhlut-
verk Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Bob
Hosklns, Gregory Hlnes, James Rem-
ar, Nlcholas Cage. Bandarfsk, fré Or-
lon. Gerð 1984.12S mín.
Cotton Club var ein þeirra
mynda sem fór fyrir ofan garð
og neðan hjá áhorfendum
þrátt fyrir marga góða hluti.
Megingalli hennar er kannski
sá að í gegn skín sú þunga undiralda sem
löngum réð ríkjum á meðan gerð þessarar
fokdýru og íburðarmiklu stórmyndar stóð.
Myndin í heild er fremur ómarkviss og
losaraleg en hinsvegar má segja að flestir
kaflar hennar, skoðaðir einir og sér eru
afburða vel gerðir. Við getum ætíö verið
þess fullviss að sá kröfuharði listamaður,
Coppola, lætur sér aldrei nægja hvers-
dagsleg vinnubrögð né ódýrar lausnir á
viðfangsefninu. Hjá honum situr jafnan hin
listræna tjáning og meðferð í fyrirrúmi.
Maðurinn er mistækur snillingur.
í stuttu máli segir Cotton Club sögu
nokkurra persóna, listamanna og gangst-
era, sem tengjast þessum sögufræga
næturklúbb og blómaskeiði hans á þriðja
áratugnum. Meö eintóma þeldökka lista-
menn innanborös (þó svo að iituðum gest-
um væri meinaður aðgangur) snillinga á
borð við Duke Ellington og Cab Calloway.
Gere leikur blásara sem gerist handbendi
hins kunna skúrks Dutch Schultz, (James
Remar) og fellur að auki fyrir fylgikonu
hans, (Diane Lane). Kveður hann þá svo
gott sem upp sinn eigin dauðadóm.
Coppola tekst oftast vel upp með hverja
sviðsetningu og atriði, vandinn er sá
hversu illa tekst til að tengja þættina
saman í órofa heild svo haldið sé eftirvænt-
ingu áhorfenda. En það er svo margt
glæsilega gert. Steppdans Hines-bræðra,
tónlistarflutningur jazzins, (sem einkum er
e. Ellington), stórkostleg kvikmyndataka,
lýsingin er oft á tíðum rafmögnuð; sviðs-
myndin innandyra og svo leikur Bob Hosk-
ins, Remars og Lane sem á spretti. Gere
er lítill leikari og blástursleikarinn greinilega
utan hans takmarka.
