Dr. Paul H. T. Thorlakson: Port four

and

The door opened and in
walked a handsome young
naval officer. He looked, at
me and then across the room
at the other bed. He said to
me: “I am Lorentz Holck,
one of your Norwegian cou-
sins,” and then he added:
“Is that Gladys, your wife,
in the other bed?” I was still
half asleep and, according to
Gladys and Cousin Lorentz,
I replied: “I hope so ” After
a few pleasant exchangees,
he said, handing me an enve
lope: “I bring you this letter
from our Captain which con-
tains an invitation to an
afternoon reception on board
our Norwegian battleship.”
Tncidcntally, T should. tell
you that many of the coun-
tries which sent official rep-
resentatives to the lOOOtb
anniversary c e 1 e b r ations,
sent them in war ships*,
which acted as hotels—very
impressive hotels, I should
add — for the members of
their delegations.
Exactly 44 years later, in
1.974, Gladys and I were
spending a holiday in Sande-
fjord, Norway, situated 35
•Great Britain sent the large bat-
t.leship “Rodney”. Lord Stanley
said in his official address to the
Icelandic Nation that “A's a re-
presentative of the Mother of
Parliaments I am pleased to be
here to salute the Grandmother
of Parliaments”.
miles south of Horten where
mother and father first met.
Our cousin, Lorentz Holck—
now a retired officer of the
Norwegian navy — and his
wife, Mary, invited us to
visit them in Horten, the
naval base on the Oslo Fjord.
We motored the 35 miles
from Sandefjord to Horten
and it is one of the most
beautiful country drives that
we have had in our travels
abroad.
Lorentz and Mary drove
us around Horten and then
took us to the former home
of Mr and Mrs. Ole Eriksen
Braarud where their daugh-
ter, Emilia, had married. Pro-
fessor Breda, a n d where
mother and father had. walk-
ed in the garden in 1885. The
large house is still standing
and is in a remarkable state
of preservation. Evidence of
its former grandeur could
still be seen. As we walked
in the garden the whole
story of mother’s and fath-
er’s first meeting was re-
enacted in our minds. There,
in this beautiful garden, the
romance had started and
there had begun the endur-
ing love story that accounts
for all of us being here
today.
This evening we honour
the memory of, and pay
tribute to, Niels Steingrimur
and Erika Rynning Thor-
laksson, and also to other
loved ones who are no long-
er with us: Octavius and
Caroline (Thomas) Thor-
laksson, Haraldur (Halli)
Sigmar, Doris (Bousfield)
Thorlakson, Harald Eastvold,
and Margaret (Sigmar)
Kristjanson.
I now ask you to rise and
stand for a moment as we
give silent thanks for the
companionship, love and joy
that they gave to us.
—Paul H. T. Thorlakson.
