' ■■ On June 18, the weather had changed for the better and Reykjavík was bathed in sunshine on this first full day of the newborn Republic. The President spoke to the people from the balcony of the Parliament building, Alþingishús. The Speaker, Gísli Sveinsson, declared the constitution in effect and the Republic founded. As can be seen from this picture, the weather did not co-operate during this all important, but short sitting of the Alþingi at Lögberg.
