Obituary:
Helgi Johanneson
(1906-1994)
Helgi Johanneson, 87,
died March 7, 1994
at St. Vincent’s Nurs-
ing Home Bismarck, North
Dakota. Services were held
on March 10 at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church, Bismarck
with the Rev. Blaine Cook
officiating. Burial was in St.
Mary’s Cemetery.

(Guðjónsdóttir)
Jóhanneson was born June
21, 1906, in Gardar, North
Dakota, where he was raised
and educated. He graduated
from the University of North
Dakota and later the William
Mitchell School of Law in St.
Paul, Minnesota.
On November 27, 1930,
he married Ann Prokosch.
Helgi was state’s attomey in
Pembina County, and prac-
tised law in Cavalier and
Walhalla.
In 1951, they moved to
Bismarck, where he worked
at the attorney general’s
office as the first assistant to
the attomey general. In 1960,
he was elected attomey gen-
eral for North Dakota, a post
he held until his retirement in
1972.
Former Govemor Art Link
who served in the Legislature
when Mr. Johanneson was
attorney general said, “He
was a dedicated public ser-
vant. He gave of himself
unselfishly to those things
that had to do with issues
that were good for the state of
North Dakota and he will be
missed very dearly.”
Supreme Court Chief
Justice Gerald VandeWalle
was an assistant under Mr.
Johanneson. “I really owe
him a lot,” VandeWalle said.
“When he became attorney
general, he turned over the
education portfolio to me.
He’d had it for years, and I
really consider that my start.”
Helgi is survived by his
wife, Anne, two daughters
and one son-in-law, Carole
and Harold Miller of
Bismarck and Jeanne Tumer
of Yakima, WA, two sons and
one daughter-in-law, Jay and
Tillie of Sacramento, CA and
Kent of Bismarck, 16 grand-
children and 14 great-grand-
children.
Helgi was preceded in
death by his parents, four sis-
ters, and four brothers. His
father, Benedikt Jóhannes-
son, was the son of Jóhannes
Jónsson and Ingibjörg
Sigurðardóttir who lived for
a long time at Torfunes in
Koldukinn, Þingeyarsýslsa.
Benedikt came to America
in 1873 and lived in Mil-
waukee, WI, for 6 years
before homesteading at
Gardar, ND, in 1879. Helgi’s
mother, Bothildur Guðjóns-
dóttir, was the daughter of
Guðjón Halldórsson and
Sigurveig Jónsdóttir, from
Oxara, Bardardal.
