“Top to bottom,
I think this is the hottest
lineup of entertainment we’ve
had at Hostfest
With those
words, Norsk
Hostfest Pres-
ident Chester Reiten
announced the lineup
of entertainment for the
17th annual Norsk
Hostfest, to be held in
Minot, North Dakota,
October 12-15, 1994.
Reiten proudly points
out, “You don’t have to
travel to Branson or Las
Vegas to experience the
magic of some of the
biggest stars in North
America. They’ll all
gather at Hostfest this
fall.” Tickets for all five
days go on sale Tues-
day, May 17 at Hostfest
headquarters in Minot.
The excitement begins Hostfest-eve,
Tuesday, October 11 when one of the
hottest acts on the continent hits town
— Tony Bennett will perform one show
at 8 pm at Hostfest’s main stage, the
Great Hall of the Vikings. Bennett has
been lending his smooth voice to musi-
cal classics for decades, but recently has
enjoyed a resurgence in popularity
among people of all ages. His current
compact disc, “Steppin’ Out” is
among the best sellers in the
nation.
On Wednesday, October 12,
when the Hostfest hits full
stride with a complete day of
activities, an old favorite will
retum to the main stage. Victor
Borge, whose one-of-a-kind mix
of comedy and music has enter-
tained millions for decades, will
present two shows, at 12:30 and
7:00 pm. Borge recently cele-
brated his 85th birthday but the
roar of his crowds indicates his
wit is as sharp as ever. As much
as Hostfest crowds love Borge,
Boige loves performing here —
he rearranged his schedule so
he could appear at Hostfest.
TONY BENNETT
A double-barreled shot of excitement
hits the stage on Thursday, October 13
when two legends share the spotlight.
Chet Atkins and Ciystal Gayle perform
two shows, at 12:30 and 7:00 pm. Atkins
is widely recognized as one of the
greatest guitar players
of all time. Gayle has
charmed the country
music business for near-
ly 20 years, ever since
her first hit, “Don’t it
Make My Brown Eyes
Blue” stormed the
charts.
On Friday, October 14,
one of country music’s
most enduring super-
stars comes back to
Hostfest. Barbara Man-
drell, one of the top
draws in the country
music hotbed of Bran-
son, Missouri, returns
by popular demand
with two shows, at
12:30 and 7:00 pm.
Mandrell is a two-time winner of
Entertainer of the Year honors from the
Country Music Association and Hostfest
crowds consistently pick her as an enter-
tainer they want to see again. Mandrell
has produced dozens of hits including
“Sleeping Single in a Double Bed” and
“Woman to Woman.”
Hostí'est’s final day is highlighted by
another popular choice with the Hostfest
crowd — The Oalc Ridge Boys will pre-
sent two shows
Saturday, Octo-
ber 15 at 12:30
and 7 pm. In
last year’s poll
of Hastfest pat-
rons, The Oak
Ridge Boys
were the third
most popular choice. They’ve been wow-
ing crowds around the world for decades
with hits such as “Elvira” and “Gonna
Take á Lot of River.”
But the entertainment at Hostfest’s
Great Hall of the Vikings is only the tip
of the iceberg. Four other stages are scat-
tered around the festival grounds bring-
ing comedy, memories, and authentic
Scandinavian entertainment to the
crowds. Topping the list of side stage
entertainers is country music great Merle
Haggard. “To have Merle Haggard per-
forming two shows each day is a real
plus for the Hostfest,” says Reiten.
Haggard is one of the best-known coun-
try singers of the past 30 years. He’s
logged 29 number one hits since 1966
including “Mama Tried,” “Okie from
Muskogee,” and “My Favorite Memory.”
Haggard will perform two shows each
day Wednesday through Saturday.
The Great Hall of the Vikings will
also be home to two Hostfest favorites:
Myron Floren and Bjoro Háland.
Reiten says, “Myron and Bjoro are big
reasons the Hostfest is what it is today.
The crowds love them every year!”
Floren is a Hostfest veteran who for-
merly played alongside music legend
Lawrence Welk. Floren rates the festival
as his number one venue, “Hostfest is
my favorite place in the world. I hope I
can keep coming back here forever.”
Háland shares Floren’s love for
Hostfest. The popular Norwegian enter-
tainer says, “I’ve never seen anything
