THE REYKJAVIK STUDY. CHANGES IN CARDIOVASCULAR
RISK-FACTORS IN MIDDLE-AGED MEN SINCE 1967.

In this general health survey one of the main
purposes is the assessment of known cardiovascular
risk-factors and search for new ones.
Participants were 10.737 men born 1907-'34
living in the Reykjavik area. They were allotted to
4 groups according to certain birthdays, Groups A,B,
C and D. In the first stage of the survey 1967-'68
-the baseline survey- Group B was examined. In sub-
sequent stages (Stage II 1970-'71, Stage III 1974-
'76 and Stage IV 1979-'81) Group B was re-examined
(study group) and Groups C, A and D were invited for
the first time (control groups). Response was
in Stage I: 75%, II: 75%,III: 70%, IV: 70%.
Smoking habits were assessed by the London
School of Hygiene questionnaire (Rose) which was
included in a standardized health questionnaire.
In the first stage of the survey the percentage
of smokers decreased from about 70% at the age of 35
to about 60% at the age of sixty, the percentage of
cigarette smokers from about 40% to about 35% while
the percentage of ex-cigarette smokers increased
from about 30% to about 38% in the same age interval
About 6% of cigarette smokers smoked cigarettes with
filter irrespective of age.
Changes in smoking habits during 1967-'76 in
the study group and control groups will be presented
