In this general prospective health survey one
of the main purposes is the assessment of known
cardiovascular risk factors and search for new ones.
Participants were 10.737 men born 1907-'34
living in the Reykjavik area. They were allotted to
4 groups according to certain birthdays, Groups A,B,
C and D. In the first stage of the survey 1967-'68
-the baseline survey- Group B was examined. In sub-
sequent stages (Stage II, 1970-'71, Stage III 1974-
'76 and Stage IV 1979-'81) Group B was re-examined
(study group) and Groups C, A and D were invited
for the first time (control groups). Response was
in Stage I: 75%, II: 73%, III: 70%, IV: 70%.
Total serum-cholesterol and triglycerides were
determined on Technicon AutoAnalyzer (I) according
to Technicon Methodology N-24a and a modification of
the method of Kessler and Lederer respectively. The
same methods were used in all stages and standardized
by participation in international Lipid standardiza-
tion programs (Atlanta, WHO Prague).
In the first stage of the survey the mean
cholesterol was 254 mg % (S:44) and mean triglyceri-
des 96 mg % (S:50) in men aged 34-61. There was a
seasonal variation in cholesterol values but not in
triglycerides.
Changes in lipid values during 1967-1976 in the
study group and control groups will be presented.
