Fufanu—a band based around the central duo of Kaktus
Einarsson and Guðlaugur Einarsson—return to Reykjavík fresh
from a recent UK tour opening for The Vaccines. Having left
behind their electronic roots and original Captain Fufanu moniker,
they now play space-rock with shades of The Jesus & Mary Chain
and ‘Vanishing Point’-era Primal Scream. Their current live lineup
sees them expanded to a quintet, so pop along to Húrra to check
out their current on-form configuration. Support comes from
two leading lights of Reykjavík’s experimental music scene, the
charming spaced-out alt-pop of DJ flugvél og geimskip, and the
bracing, minimal compositions of Hekla Magnúsdóttir. JR
Reykjavík's Tectonics festival will rumble to life for the fourth time
this month. Named after Iceland's geographical situation as the
meeting point between the Eurasian and North American tectonic
plates, the festival also occupies the active fault line between
experimental and classical music, offering an intriguing selection
of homegrown and visiting talents. Featured performers this year
include Tony Conrad, Robyn Schulkowsky, Alvin Curran,
Stephan O’Mallev, Jan Rose and Joel Stern, with performances
by experimental duos Usurper and Part Wild Horses Mane
on Both Sides. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra premieres
work by Áki Ásgeirsson, Magnús Pálsson and Úlfur Hansson
along with works by Catherine Lamb and Klaus Lang. Highly
