ABSTRACT The Hagafell glaciers surge Two southern outlets of Langjökull, Hagafells- jökull eystri and Hagafellsjökull vestari, surged in the late winler/early summer of 1980. Measurements camed out by the author and his companions on Oct. 25th and 26th 1980 showed that Hagafellsjökull eystri had advanced 950—1000 m since July 1979 and Hagafellsjökull vestari (Fig. 3) 700 m since 1978. In 1975 Hagafellsjökull eystri surged 1200 m. The 1980 advance brought its front into lake Haga- vatn (Fig. 2) and the river Hvítá, into which the water from that lake ultimately flows, was unusually rnuddy the entire summer. The col over which lake Hagavatn has its outflow was eroded so that the lake level is now 4—5 meters lower than before the surge. JÖKULL 30. ÁR 77
