Jaakko Eino Kalevi / Panos from Komodo
Finnish alt-pop wünderkind Jaakko Eino Kalevi glides into town
this weekend for a free one-off show at Loft Hostel. Jaakko mixes
languid rhythms with synth melodies in his atmospheric, hazy
songs—perhaps like the analogue, deep-fried acid-pop John Maus,
pushed through a filter of 80s synth-pop songwriting. Support
comes from performance-art-punk duo Panos from Komodo. JR

This issue’s picker is none other than the wonderful Rex Beckett!
Montreal-born, Rex has been monitoring Reykjavík’s local music
and art scenes for almost seven years, writing and reviewing for the
Grapevine. Then in 2014 she crossed over and became a participant,
fronting synthpop band Antimony. Rex admits she’s a bit of a sloth
and generally only goes to shows her friends are playing, or that are
happening at Stofan (her place of employment). “Luckily I have very
talented friends in the music scene,” she boasts, adding that she
otherwise saves her time and money for really interesting international
artists that don’t often come to Iceland, “like Chris Cornell! Why is he
not on the 2016 Airwaves programme? Come on, Grímur...” Art-wise,
she’s drawn to shows by newcomers exhibiting for the first time, as well
as “exhibits that open on Saturdays and have free wine.”
You can find the events our picker of the issue found to be interesting
spread out over the music and art pages, marked with this icon.
