Provocative And Political
‘Arabian Nights, Vol. 3: The Enchanted One’
Premieres August 5 at Bíó Paradís, Hverfisgata 54 (E5) Admission: 1,600 ISK
Despite its name, this film is most definitely not an adap-
tation of Arabian Nights. However, the film, which is set in
present-day Portugal, does follow a similar structure as the
well-known collection of Arabic stories and folktales, in that
the protagonist Scheherazade must tell stories to save her life.
These stories spin together to form a provocative and political
masterpiece, in which director Miguel Gomes paints a pas-
sionate picture of his country. ‘The Enchanted One’ is the fi-
nal film in a trilogy that in total runs for nearly 400 minutes,
an impressive feat in this era of instant gratification. Bíó
Paradís screened the first two films in the series earlier this
year, and will begin screening the third and final installment
on August 5. IW
