It keeps the right conversation- friendly tone by not having TV screens or other distractions. It’s the perfect place to fill up on tasty small plates before a night on the town. The menu features lots of traditional Icelandic ingredients, including the cute and oh-so-delicious puffin. Also—try the langoustine dumplings. You’re welcome. 2 Matur Og Drykkur Grandagarður 2 Matur og Drykkur has become the place we tell friends to try when they’re visiting. hey take classic Icelandic ingredients and bring them up-to-date. The most dramatic, and dare we say, must-try item on their menu is the cod head. It’s cooked in chicken stock and then glazed. For some, the idea of a cod head seems a little too experimental, but trust us, it’s delicious. Start with the cheeks and then just keep eating until it’s no longer looking at you. 3 Kaffi Vínyl Hverfisgata 76 Kaffi Vínyl has wedged itself into the growing vegetarian scene in 101, becoming not only the best vegetarian place, but also the best vegan place, with a completely vegan menu. Kaffi Vínyl sticks to its guns when it comes to coffee, too—try their oat milk latte and cappuccino. We didn’t know oats could be milked, but wherever that elusive oat-teat was hidden, we’re glad they found it. True to its name, the restaurant is lined with crates of vinyl from every era, and regularly invites local DJs to come through and do some digging. 4 Ban Thai Laugavegur 130 Ban Thai is a rare thing in Iceland: a specialty food place that manages to keep quality despite the difficulty in obtaining high quality ingredi- ents. It won Grapevine's "Best Thai Food" title this year (and has the past four out of five years). Their spicy dishes manage to give the fresh, pi- quant flavour of southeast Asia. It’s also the only restaurant Russell Crowe visited while in Iceland. What does that mean? Try it and find out. 5 The Map Useful Numbers Emergency number: 112 Medical help: 1770 Dental emergency: 575 0505 Information: 1818 Taxi: Hreyfill: 588 5522 - BSR: 561 0000 Public Phones There are few public payphones in the centre. Here you'll find international visitors and every kind of Reykjavík local, chilling by day or dancing to the pulse of house music by night. 6 Kiki Laugavegur 22 Voted Grapevine's "Best Bar To Go Dancing." Their pop ‘n’ classics policy is perfect for those who like to sing along to every track they hear. Be- ing the city’s only queer club, Kiki is also the place where people really let loose. 7 Bryggjan Brugghús Grandagarður 8 This place is huge, great for big groups of people and parties. It isn’t really a bar, but it’s a good place with delicious food, good beer and a solid view. Bonus points for being able to watch the beer being brewed on site. 8 Mengi Óðinsgata 2 MENGI is more of an arts space than a bar. It has a formal atmosphere, and offers a programme gleaned from the creative end of the musical spectrum, encouraging collaborative and experi- mental sets for a rapt, seated audience.
