III. Practical goals in teaching the dictionary Below is a list of goals for teach- ing dictionary use, and I daresay the Iist is fairly exhaustive for the needs of most primary and secon- dary school students. I first pub- lished the list for a model in the se- condary schools of East Iceland. When composing the list I consi- dered the supplementary work for dictionary learning from Oxford and Longman, though Oxford has certainly given me the most ideas, as anyone who has their workbook Use Your Dictionary can see. Fin- ally, I assert that Örn og Örlygur’s dictionary could fulfill almost every need implied in these skills (the only things I really miss are in- formation on whether nouns are countable or uncountable and on the meaning of prefixes and suf- fixes). 1. Finding the meaning both of the dictionary’s own and gener- al abbreviations and symbols. 2. Pronouncing by phonetic spell- ing (including stress) 3. Spelling aloud in English let- ters 4. Writing words spelled aloud in English letters 5. Finding a word the student has only heard 6. Finding preferred spellings 7. Finding end-of-line divisions 8. Using information on countab- le/uncountable nouns and plural forms 9. Seeing number of syllables (mainly because of lO.thenext point below) 10. Forming comparative/superla- tive adjectives/adverbs 11. Finding which verb forms to use in sentences and how to write them 12. Locating an appropriate head- word and definition for a given context 13. Followingcross-references 14. Choosing which derivatives to use 15. Finding meanings of prefixes- /suffixes for coined words 16. Understanding idioms 17. Getting the right prepositions or particles to use This really isn’t all that long a list! Morover, these are all fairly ess- ential skiils. I suggest them mostly as a basis for coordination in the goals we have for teaching diction- ary use. If we can agree on those goals, then we should also be able to decide whether or when we need to exercise use of what kind of dic- tionary. Thanks for your attention, as well as to Málfríður for communi- cating my message in this language, whether she really should or not.
