92 AT L A N T I CA ICELANDa SPECIAL PROMOTION Look, Listen & Learn NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ICELAND The National Museum, Sudurgata 41, 101 Reykjavík, 530-2200. www.natmus.is Open Tuesday through Sunday. Free admission on weekdays. The exhibition “Iceland” at the National Museum focuses on two European photographers’ impres- sions of Iceland. The German Alfred Ehrhardt and Mark Watson, who was British, traveled sepa- rately to Iceland in the summer of 1938. Although both came to see and experience Iceland’s nature, the fundamental purpose of their visits differed. Watson had dreamed of visiting the country since childhood and his photographs are akin to tradi- tional travel photography. Ehrhardt, meanwhile, took a completely different approach; he traveled to Iceland for the express purpose of photograph- ing forms and the primal energy of the land, as reflected in lava formations and hot spring excretions. Showing at the National Museum 16 June - 24 September 2006. THE CULTURE HOUSE The Culture House, Hverfisgata 15, 101 Reykjavík, 545-1400. www.thjodmenning.is Open daily 11 am – 5 pm. Guided tours every weekday except Wednesdays, at 3:30 pm. The Culture House is a popular venue for vari- ous exhibits and events. The featured exhibition, The Medieval Manuscripts – Eddas and Sagas, presents Iceland’s most important contribution to world heritage: the mythology, legends and epic tales that make up the classical Northern heri- tage. Other current attractions include an impres- sive display of modern Icelandic fashion by the country’s top designers, an exhibit on Icelandic emigrants to Utah in the 19th century, and a view of how Iceland and its people were perceived by foreign visitors in later centuries. Visit the website for all the latest information. NATIONAL GALLERY OF ICELAND Fríkirkjuvegur 7, 101 Reykjavík. Open daily 11 am – 5pm, closed Mondays. Exhibition Rooms, Gallery Shop, Internet Café, Educational Center. FREE ADMISSION. www.listasafn.is. The main thread in landscape art is traced from the beginning of the 20th century to today. The focus is on works from the gallery’s permanent collection that reflect the rich landscape tradition and interpretation of folklore that hail from some of the pioneers in Icelandic art. The return of the landscape paint- ing and folklore in the 1980s is covered, through the exhibition of more recent works. 8 July – 24 September 2006. 060-94ICELANDAtl406.indd 92 23.6.2006 12:46:32
