WELCOME ABOARD In many ways, Icelandair is unique among international airlines. Apart from our role as a passenger carrier we are a part of a group providing compre- hensive travel and flight services to and from our home country. With roots stretching back almost 70 years, Icelandair is proud of its position as one of the world’s longest established airlines. The Icelandair story began in 1937 with the formation of a little airline in the north of Iceland which three years later turned into Flugfélag Íslands or Icelandair. Another milestone was reached in 1944 with the foundation of another airline Loftleidir, which became known as Icelandic Airlines. In 1945, Flugfélag Íslasnds made its first international flights to Scotland and Denmark. Loftleidir began international operations in 1947, and its pioneering low-fare service across the North Atlantic commenced in 1953. In 1973 both airlines merged to form Icelandair. Today, Icelandair’s route network of 21 international destinations includes six North American and 15 European gateways. Icelandair’s route network is based on a hub-and-spoke system with Keflavík International Airport as the nerve center. Annually Icelandair carries around 1,5 million passengers, or five times the population of its home country. The Icelandair Group consists of flight and travel service companies, which form the foundation of the fast growing Icelandic tourist industry, and include Icelandair, Icelandair Cargo, Icelandair Hotels, Air Iceland, Iceland Travel, Reykjavík Excursions, Icelandair/Hertz, Icelandair Ground Services, Icelandair Technical Services, Loftleidir-Icelandic and Icelandair Shared Services. Icelandair has always been privately owned and is registered on the Icelandic Stock Exchange. Icelandair has been a member of IATA since 1950, a member of AEA since 1957 and the International Flight Safety Foundation from 1966. Icelandair remains committed to its tradition of service for generations to come. THE ICELANDAIR STORY 099 ATL306 Icelandair.indd 99 22.6.2006 23:37:31
