Natural wonders are never very far apart on the Reykjanes
peninsula, which means that families traveling with children
need not worry about spending too much time cooped up in
the car. Self-guided adventures around Reykjanes are suited for
people of all abilities and interests, with well-maintained and
family-friendly hiking trails, informative visitor centers, and also
a variety of local museums and cultural institutions. Better yet,
the whole peninsula is accessible all year round—the mountains
and hillsides at the center of Reykjanes can also be reached in
wintertime.
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
Reykjanes is something of a wonderland for geological enthu-
siasts, but there’s plenty for travelers with other interests, too.
The peninsula boasts five golf clubs, with courses that are inte-
grated into the natural landscape. Those who’d like an expert’s
take on the area can choose from a wealth of guided tours, from
sea-kayaking and northern lights cruises to snorkeling and spe-
lunking (caving) expeditions for the more daring traveler. Criss-
crossed with bike paths, Reykjanes is also very popular with cy-
clists, and bike rentals and guided bike tours can be a great way
to experience this area up close.

Of course, when you’re done adventuring, a dip in the healing
waters of the Blue Lagoon is simply a must (don’t forget to book
your tickets in advance!) and there are a wide variety of restau-
rants and cafés on the peninsula, many of which source their
products from local farms and facilities.
Whatever route you take around Reykjanes, it’s sure to be a
memorable journey, and one that you’ll be glad you embarked
upon. So, slow down and enjoy the ride: your Icelandic adven-
ture starts as soon as you step off the plane.
