This is the first issue of Iceland Review
under the new ownership of MD
Reykjavík and CEO Sigurþór Marteinn
Kjartansson. I very much look forward to our
cooperation. I’d like to thank Benedikt
Jóhannesson, Iceland’s new minister of
finance, for the 14 good years I worked under
his ownership of the magazine. We had good
times together. Secondly, I’d like to thank my
managing editors, Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir
and Zoë Robert, for their superb work during
the years they have worked here. Both
decided to move onto other endeavors before
the new ownership was announced, though
they may still contribute the occasional article.
For this issue, which will be their last, they
interviewed another former Iceland Review
journalist, now Iceland’s first lady, Eliza Reid,
about the Iceland Writers Retreat which she
co-founded.
With the new ownership, Iceland Review
might change, but the core will remain the
same, focusing on the Icelandic people and
the land we live in; its culture, design, daily life
and history, plus places out of sight, such as
Bakkafjörður. In this issue, we have two and a
half stories from this outpost in Northeast
Iceland. The first is about the grade school
destined to close for good this term, and the
second is about the abandoned farm Steintún.
Bakkafjörður is also mentioned in the photo-
story about driftwood on our shores.
Iceland is rapidly changing. Therefore, it’s
refreshing to meet sheep farmer, lover of the
land, and fighter for unspoiled nature, Heiða—a
young woman who lives far from the glittering
lights of the capital. You will, however, find
glitter in the Reykjavík Fashion Festival, and
both sadness and happiness in Iceland’s best
press pictures of the year. Furthermore, we
look at the pollution which threatens Mývatn
lake, one of the country’s top tourist
destinations.
The issue’s first landscape series, Green
Land, is from Vestur-Skaftafellsýsla county,
which farmer Heiða calls home. And we meet
two award-winning photographers, Ragnar
Axelsson, a.k.a. RAX, and Christina Simons,
as well as the award-winning film director
Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson. We take a
look at Dill, the first restaurant in the Republic
to earn a Michelin Star. We also visit a former
fishmeal factory turned culture palace, Marshall
House, down by Reykjavík’s old fishing harbor.
It’s sure to become a favorite destination for
culture lovers in Reykjavík.
More… yes, the Last Page, on the last page
of the magazine, where it has been for the past
50 years or so.
And, again, I want to thank Eygló and Zoë
for their great contribution to the magazine. I
wish them all the best for the future. Takk.
