Delving into the Ice
LAVA “Iceland Volcano & Earthquake Centre” is a new inter-
active educational exhibition center dedicated to the unique
geology of Iceland. Located in Hvolsvöllur, just off Ring Road
1, it’s an easy day trip from Reykjavík or a must-see addition to
your South Iceland trip.
The LAVA Centre explores the art and science of geology
and the volcanic systems in Iceland. Information from past
centuries’ eruptions demonstrates just how strong a presence
volcanoes still have in Iceland. Feel the forces of nature as you
experience an earthquake and observe the Fiery Heart of Ice-
land: a 12-meter-high structure simulating the mantle plume
and the magma flow underneath Iceland. An interactive learn-
ing center allows you to explore the wonders of volcanoes and
earthquakes. In addition, there’s a cinema auditorium where
visitors can see the magnificence of eruptions in HD and 4K.
LAVA Centre was recently voted the second best new open-
ing globally for tourists in 2017 by Lonely Planet.
The LAVA Exhibition is open daily, beginning June 1, from 9
am to 7 pm. For ticket information, visit: lavacentre.is
A truly unique experience, the world’s longest ice tunnel takes
you into a magical world under the ice cap of Langjökull,
Iceland’s second largest glacier.
Into the Glacier takes you on an adventure trip by snowmo-
bile or monster truck, up to 1,300 meters (4,265 ft) above sea
level, where you can enjoy spectacular views from the top of
the glacier. Then you enter the 500-m-long (1,640 ft) man-made
tunnel to explore its many spaces and mystical rooms, as well as
a 40-m-deep (131 ft) crevasse from its bottom, marveling at the
beautiful ice formations in this surreal environment.
The tour guides offer a warm welcome at the cold location,
make sure visitors feel safe at all times, and educate them about
glaciers and their importance and effect on nature.
Tours are offered all year round with departures from Húsafell,
West Iceland, as well as being included in day tours by oper-
ators in Reykjavík. For more information, rates and bookings,
