I S L A N D N AT I O N S
SHAPED BY ISOLATION
RAX is older than I. Three months
to be exact. And a best friend of
almost 40 years. Together, we have
traveled thousands upon thousands
of kilometers, searching for the right
moment, at home and abroad. He
works in black and white, I in color.
“I always say that everything that
looks good in color looks even great-
er in black-and-white,” he insists. His
passion for photography is inspir-
ing—as is his compassion for people,
his love of nature, his special ability
to talk to dogs, to make horses laugh,
to control the light, to take even
better images today than he did yes-
terday, and, finally, his ability to make
the most boring stories amazingly
funny.
Top: Faroe Islands 1996. From the village Bøur on Vágar island.
Hanni Mikkelsen and Katrin Rein try to get a bull out of
the village to Gásadalur valley.
Bottom: Iceland 1989. Kristinn Guðnason, king of the mountain,
crosses Eystri-Rangá river during the sheep roundup. He leads,
pulling one of the sheep with him, and the rest of the flock follows.
