Dear Sir
The friendship, which you have been so kind,
to treat me with, on all occasion makes me
hope, that however frequently I intrude on you,
you will continue in your wonted goodness. It
is on that account, I presume to beg the favour
of you to permit the bearer Mr MacCarthy of
Bordeaux and his family, to talce a view of tlre
British Museum. The short stay, he makes in
London prevents him from making a regular
application for tickets, which can tlrerefore be
compensated with your kindness only.

Hiö þriðja bréf er til James Parkinson,
gripasafnseiganda, og er dálítið gaman að
sjá hversu Grímur getur lagt sig fram þar
sem háttsettur aðili er í taflinu. Bréfið er í
tvennu formi, annað auðsýnilegt uppkast að
hinu með svo mörgum formsbreytingum að
sjá má að Grímur vildi vanda sig sem mest
til þess að gjöfin, sem um er talað, yrði ekld
gerð afturreka.
A-gerð:

The Chevalier Edelcrantz Secretary to His
Swedish Majesty having left a specimen of
beautifull Porphyry to my care, in order to dis-
pose of it as I thought most convenient, I shall
beg leave to depose it in Your Museum
Hér þrýtur aðalmálið, en Grímur hefir auð-
sýnilega verið í vandræðum með að orða
beióni sína, því að hann hefir ritað og strik-
að út „I would should be guilty of he trust
thus lodged in me, were I (ofan línu were I
to depose it anywhere but in that) if I did
not request tlie favour I slrall beg leave to
depose it, in your Museum equally sacred
to (neðar) that you will be pleased to (give?)
it a place in your Museum".
Nú var Gríniur sýnilega kominn í stand-
andi vandræði með orðalag formsatriða, og
því tók liann sér nýja pappírsörlc, færði sig
yfir í þriðju persónu og gekk öllu betur.
B-gerð:
Mr Thorkelin presents his best compliments
to Mr Parkeson (svo) and begs the favour of his
deposing A Specimen of Swedish Porphyry in
his inestimable Museum as a present from the
Chevalier Edelcrantz Secretary to the King of
Sweden.
Browne (svo) porphyry intermixed white and
red is found in great abundance in Sweden the
County of Dalarne Elvedals parish, where a
manufacture is set up a foot to make Urns,
vases, table, Chimney pieces etc. of every shape
and dimension.
The specific gravity of this porph. compared
with water is 2700 to 1000.
The hardness is the lOth degree below the
diamont.
Acids have no power on its surface and it bears
the fire fully as well as Jasper and Cornelians.
4 Séra Samuel Ayscough (1748-1814) var prestur að
vígslu. Sem uppbót við prestslaun sín fékk hann
atvinnu sem safnvðrður náttúrugripasafnsdeildar
Bretasafns eftir að hafa unnið um hríð að hinni
fyrstu handritaskrá safnsins. Hann var orðlagt góð-
menni, og Grímur hefir auðsjáanlega verið búinn að
koma sér í mjúkinn hjá honum meðan hann vann
að afritun Bjólfskviðu, svo að 1790 sá hann sér fært
að knýja á dyr prests með þessa beiðni fyrir hönd
MacCarthys vinar síns. Ekki hefir tekist að hafa
uppi á neinum fleiri atriðum um mann þenna, en af
nafni hans og heimilisfangi (í Bordeaux) má geta sér
til aö hann hafi verið írskrar ættar.
