Summary This article deals with recent developments in marriage and the family in Iceland with comparison with the other Nordic countries. Material from an intemational Gallup survey on values and lifestyles which in Iceland took place in 1984 is used so as to throw some light on the bare statistical data. By comparing the two fíve years periods 1971-75 and 1981-85 it is revealed that quite a drastic decline has happened in the marriage rate in Iceland, or 30% between the two periods (Table 1). In Sweden and Denmark one can see the same trends by looking further back, a 37% decline when 1961-70 is compared with 1981-84. Unmarried cohabitation as an altemative form of family organisation plays apparently a major role in the decline of the marriage rate. The increase in unmarried cohabitation is noted among other things by the steadily rising rate of children bom out of wedlock. In Iceland 63% of those children were in 1981-85 bom to parents who were cohabiting as compared to 36% in 1971-75 (Tables 4 and 5). The Gallup survey affírms reality in these matters since it reveals that unmarried cohabitation and the birth of an illegitimate child is met with very little disapproval. 41 L
