Northern California lcelandic Group
Meets in Oakland
A group of more than 100
persons interested in Ice-
landic culture and traditions
enjoyed a most plesant even-
ing of dinner and dancing on
December 3rd, at a colorful
restaurant on Jack London
Square, Oakland, California.
The participants were Ice-
landers who have homes in
Northern California or who
are university students, visi-
tors, or travelers, together
with an even larger number
of Americans of Icelandic
ancestry.
The location of this pafty
was especially attractive. The
restaurant overlooks the har-
bor on one side, and on the
other a brightly lighted
square decorated with a tall
illuminated Christmas tree. A
number of the landies present
wore the Icelandic national
dress at this party, adding
greatly to the holiday spirit.
The program was opened
by the singing of the national
anthems of the United States
and of Iceland. A message of
greeting from Iceland’s Am-
bassador to the U.S.A., His
Excellency Mr. Thor Thors,
was read by Rev. S. O. Thor-
laksson, Iceland’s Consul in
San Francisco. Rev. Thorlaks-
son also served as Master of
Ceremonies for the program,
and introduced visitors and
people who recently have
arrived in the San Francisco
Bay area. Among these were:
Mr. Guddy Einarsson of
Glenboro, Manitoba, Dr. and
Mrs. Bjarni Jónsson af the
University of California, Mr.
Ralph E. and Mrs. Ingibjörg
Johnson, Lt. and Mrs. Gene
Nelson (Erla Karlsdóttir), and
Mr. Jens Pálsson. A double
quartet of men sang three
Icelandic songs, one a quint
song (tvísöng), and led the
entire group in singing
traditional Icelandic folk
songs. The numbers offered
by the singers were: „Sjá
roðann á hnjúkunum háu“,
„Ég bið að heilsa“, and „ísland
farsælda frón“. The singers
were: Steinthor Gudmunds,
Barney Hermann, Halldór
Helgason, Vigfús Helgason,
Vigfús Jakobsson, Lyman E.
Lorensen, Carl Magnússon,
Sveinn Ólafsson. This group
was directed and accompan-
ied by Louise Gudmunds.
