The thought process he outlined to
me was very much in character:
taking good time to decide—but then
pressing onward with utter determi-
nation. He is averse to snap decisions
on matters of potentially far-reaching
consequences. In the autumn of 1977,
he was approached on running in a
certain political primary in Reykjavik.
Although he had never been active in
politics, Fridrik enjoyed immense po-
pularity- -and the idea behind the
overture was to translate this into
votes. But he firmly declined, saying:
"lf I study a proposal and get
interested in it, l'll work hard to make
it a reality. I simply can't jump into
the political arena on the spur of the
moment. I never like to move that
way."
The Course Is Set
Ruhning for the highest post in the
chess worfd is a different story. Fridrik
Ólafsson made up his mind in his
accustomed way. His course is set.
Unlike the aspiring politician whose
constituency is in doubt, Fridrik has
unqualified domestic backing—
including assurances that Reykjavík
would play a good host if the FIDE
headquarters were to be transferred
there.
