REFLECTIONS
Cont. of page i 3
towards each other, cement-
ed a life long bondage, per-
haps in some ways stronger
than through normal union.
It was my good fortune,
and that of my two sisters,
to come into the life of these
two people at a pre-school
age. With our parents, we
lived in their old log house
next to a new frame house
that they occupied with the
boys who then ranged in age
from late teens to early
twenties. From then on, to
their last days, we kept close
contact.
When I think back, I see
Jón, a man of small physical
stature with hands and feet
deformed through a rheuma-
tic condition. He was slow
moving but always. active
with the farm chores. He
rarely ever left the farm,
only on rare occasions would
he go to Lundar which re-
quired a day back and forth.
His only apparent commu-
nity activity was an interest
in the local farmers organi-
zation which owned and
shared farm implements.
This man never used to-
bacco, never touched alco-
holic beverages, did not use
foul language and did not go
to church. He never had to
use English as he lived in an
Icelandic community a n d
stayed within his adopted
family circle.
His thoughts must have
harkened back to Iceland
like that of most people who
migrated from there to live
on this continent. He did as
many of his contemporaries
had done, he brought a phy-
sical reminder that he could
carry, a small stone, an en-
during piece of Iceland. This
valuable memento, preserv-
ed in a silk bag, he gave to
my sister, which she retains
to tþis day.
Jón is one of the great
people of our heritage, that
has given the Icelandic peo-
ple such a high level of ac-
ceptance and recognition in
Canada and the United
States. In a large part, the
great qualities of this mod-
est man are a reflection of
the Icelandic people that
came here and laid the
foundations w h i c h have
given our ethnic group the
high standards of life and
acceptance we enjoy.
To them we must be for-
ever grateful.
