Lögberg-Heimskringla - 13.12.1991, Blaðsíða 13
Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudaguj- 13. desember 1-991- • 13 Dave Stevenson says the food retail business is getting more challenging all the time, and having been in it most of his life, he should know what he’s talking about. For the last four years he, his wife Terry and son David, have been oper- ating the Lucky Dollar Store on West Main Street in Lundar. Before that, it was IGA at the other end of the street for two years, and before that Dave spent 25 years in the Co-op system -14 in the Pilot Mound area, five in Alberta, and an earlier six years with Safeway in Winnipeg. “I actually started out with the Hudson’s Bay Co. Northern Stores Division around the Bay in Ontario and Manitoba,” he said. “Interestingly enough, at that time it was Sigfusson Transportation that delivered our goods up there, and some of those drivers were probably Lundar people. “Recently we found in some old family papers that my father had bought his commercial fishing licence here in 1929,” he chuckled. With some Icelandic blood of his own, and having been raised right across Lake Manitoba in the Big Point Langruth area, Stevenson (whose family name was once Sigurdson), says the family feels right at home in Lundar now. “We have been well received and accepted here,” he said. Closely linked with local economy Stevenson’s Foods is trying to retum the favour through service, a wide variety of products at competi- tive prices and by providing employ- ment. In addition to Dave, Terry and David, the staff currently consists of Best Wishes to All! They are open six full days a week and four hours on Sunday after- noons. The Stevensons have made some changes in the store since they bought it from Ernie Oliver and Shirley Nordal four years ago, but they don’t plan any more for a while anyway. “Not until the economy turns around,” Dave said, “and that won’t be soon - we’re not out of the slump yet. “The farmers’ tough situation is definitely affecting other businesses, and until it turns around there will be no real recovery,” he predicted. He said over his years in business he has seen a lot of changes, the main over-all one being the move away from bulk products to prepack- aged everything. “Lately, though, we’ve noticed that people are steering away from the most expensive items like steaks and some of the higher priced packages, because of the hard times.” He says the fast-paced life styles of most customers contributes to their interest in ready-to-use products. “Because there is a lot more pre-sale Dave and David Jr. Stevenson preparation now, the equipment used in stores is much more sophisticated and extensive,” he said. “It used to be all you needed was a knife, a saw, maybe a cash register and a pencil, but now it’s computers and many other electronically-con- trolled devices.” David Jr. fits right in there, with his degree in computer science from Brandon University and a variety of other employment experiences before joining the family business. “It’s interesting how much of that learning is applicable to what I’m doing now,” David said. The Stevensons have three other children, all grown - Michael in Brandon, John in Regina and Suzanne in Winnipeg, and one three-month- old grandson.
