Peter Eyvindson’s newest
book, The Backward Brothers Sce
the Light, is a delightful selection
from the tales of the Icelandic
folk-characters, the Bakkabræður.
This book seems to mark a turn-
ing point in Mr. Eyvindson’s sub-
ject matter, and this work is a
great success. There are many
unusual qualities that makc this
book a valuable addition to a
child’s collection.
The language of the book is
direct and economical, but not
sparse. Thisistypicaloflcelandic
writing in general, and it is rc-
freshing to see Mr. Eyvindson
make useofthisstyle. Manychil-
dren’s books make use of strange
and loopy language to entertain
their young readers; there is no
silliness in the language of this
story (unless it be the strange-
sounding Icelandic names). The
silliness isentirely contextual, and
the dryness of this plain style serves only
to heighten the hilarity of the
Bakkabræður’s situation. But the plain
stylc not only makcs use of a kind of
understatemcnt;sayingbaldlythat“Thcse
brothers seemed only to have one brain
between them,” is also a hilarious thing
for a small child to hear.

surdity of the tale is captured neatly, from
our first impressions of the brothers
(“...they often acted in a strange and
backward manner”), to the panorama in
which their ridiculousness is fully real-
ized (“All morning long, the mad rush
continued”).
I hopethisbook sellsvery wcll. Peter
Eyvindson and Craig Terlson have rea-
son to be proud, it is truly a very good
book. I hope they collaboratc again to
produce more Bakkabræður books.
This book makes me feel safe. Like
these backward brothers from Bakki, it’s
good to feel that even though we are very
stupid, we will do all right if we are
sincerc, and work hard together.

also, it might be a little hard for some
people to figure out what brcnnivín is.
The illustrations are simply wonder-
ful. CraigTcrlson’s interpretation is full
