Christmas Bells, Continued
and Loa Olafson’s and Emily
Vigfusson’s gentle voices served to quiet
things down a bit.
Suddenly the church bells began to
ring, then the loud peal of the organ,
played by Magnea Sigurdson, alerted
us to be ready. Finally, we heard Rever-
end Olafson’s announcement, “The
children’s program will now begin.”
Everything seemed to fall into place
as we marched on the stage. Under
Freda Danielson’s able direction our
Christmas songs rang out with joy. Lit-
tle Timmy remembered every line of
the welcome words; the Three Wise
Men looked resplendent and solemn
as they placed their gifts of gold, frank-
incense and myrrh before the Christ
Child; Molly beamed happily as she
stood and sang with the other angels,
her angel wings now firmly anchored
with a hidden pin. Finally the concert
ended with the whole chorus softly
singing “Silent Night.”
The Christmas tree candles were
now lit with long tapers by Tryggvi
Ingjaldson and Stefan Gudmundson,
who then kept up a vigil by the tree,
lest the candles catch on fire. We
children walked down the stage
steps, where each one of us received
a red mesh bag filled with Christmas
candy and an orange. We then pro-
ceeded slowly along the aisles of
the church, singing this particular
adaptation of the lovely Icelandic

Christmas hymn “I Bethlehem er barn

það blessað barn, það blessað bam.
At last it was time for the Christmas
gifts to be passed around. As our names
were called out we rushed up to receive
our annual Christmas card, with a 25
cent paper bill tucked inside, from our
aunt, Sesselja Oddson. A whole 25
cents of our own, to spend as we wished!
As we walked home from the concert,
clutching our paper of money we talked
of the treasures we would buy.
“I’m going to buy a brush and comb
set.”
“I’ll buy the book ‘Tom Sawyer’.”
“I’m going to get a toy tractor.”
“I want to save mine for something
special.”
“Come on, let’s hurry home for our
own Christmas tree and present.”
“And for Mom’s strawberry tarts with
whipped cream.”
As we reached the top of the
riverbank Gunnar shouted, “Oh look.”
There, ahead of us, we saw the glit-
tering lights of the cross at the top of St.
Benedict’s Convent, shedding a bril-
liant glow against the night sky. This
was a special night, for the cross was
only lit up on Holy nights, or if some
special visitors had arrived at the Con-
vent.
The starry sky above, the shimmer-
ing lights on the St. Benedict’s Con-
vent cross, the joy and wonder in our
hearts; these were all there in the magic
of that Christmas night in 1933 and
they brought to mind those wondrous
words from “Pippa’s Song”.
“God’s in His Heaven,
All’s right with the world.”
