Kirsten Wolf honoured
In the area of the humanities
the winner was Dr. Kirsten Wolf,
Chair of the Department of lcelandic at the University of Manitoba
Dr. Kirsten Wolf s
scholarly output is
“staggering,” says one
of her nominators, and has
eanied her a “solid intema-
tional reputation at an age
when most other scholars are
just setting out. Her impressive
accomplishments reflect her
discipline, scholarly acumen
and diversity of approách.”
Wolf, who is both head and
chair of Icelandic studies has
published extensively, includ-
ing writing or editing six
books, all only seven years
since obtaining her doctorate.
Her colleagues speak high-
ly of Wolf s ability to juggle
research, a heavy teaching
load, administrative work, and
community outreach. Her
broad knowledge of
Scandinavian languages, liter-
ature and history has also
enabled her to make signifi-
cant contributions outside the
area of Old Norse. In recogni-
tion of her contributions.to
the fíeld, Wolf has been invit-
ed to deliver papers at two
upcoming intemational con-
ferences.
Wolf s published works are
credited with bringing a
renewed vitality to the study of
Icelandic Canadian literature.
They include: the upcoming
400 page edition of Gydinga
saga (The Saga of the Jews),
which is expected to take its
place as the standard edition
in the field of Old Norse stud-
ies; the recently-completed
edition of Saga Heilagrar
Önnu (The Saga ofSaint .
Anne) on the lives of
Icelandic saints; Medieval
Scandinavia: An
Encyclopaedia, a massive vol-
ume of almost 800 pages that
brings together the research of
some 250 scholars world wide
and is expected to become an
indispensable tool and refer-
ence guide for students and
scholars; English translations
of Some Principles ofOral
Narrative Research, a work by
Danish folklorist Axel Olrik
and Westem Icelandic Stories;
plus Westem Iceiandic
Women Writers.
