vices and are now in the process of
forming a new company, Family tree
(Ættartréð), a genealogical service.
The objective is to assist
Canadians and Americans of
Icelandic origin in finding their rela-
tives and their ancestral homes. All
records will be made bn a computer,
with the help of an Icelandic
genealogical program.
Jóhanna and Þorgerður, the own-
ers of the company, travelled to
Canada in 1984 and became aware of
the great interest among Icelandic-
Canadians, in learning about their
origins and visiting their forefathers’
homes.
In the period 1874 to 1914 a total
of around 14,000 people left Iceland
for the New World and some 7,000
came from North-Eastern and
Eastem Iceland. From Breiðdal 200
people left during those 40 years but
it wasn’t until 1940 that the village of
Breiðdalsvík started to grow.
This family tree service will, ini-
tially, be offered solely to those from
Eastern and North Eastem Iceland,
but will later be extended to those
from the rest of the country.
