every rock face and cliff.
A good way to see them and some
rugged but beautiful scenery is to take
the cliff walks which can be followed
from the crater of an extinct volcano,
now a green amphitheatre which
doubles as the island’s rugged 14 hole
golf course.
Herjólfsdalur they call it and not
only was it the site of the first
dwelling, whose foundations have
been excavated, but it’s the scene of a
huge three-day open-air indepen-
dence party early each August when
15,000 people gather to camp, drink,
sing, drink again, dance, eat and
drink some more.
August, too, is the month of anoth-
er major occurrence, the Great Puffin
Release. This occurs when puffin par-
ents stop feeding their youngsters,
who, driven by hunger, flap down
//-
rv
toward the lightest spot on the hori-
zon, the ocean, where the youngsters
must catch fish and small crustaceans
to survive (they can’t lift off the water
again until they eat and grow
stronger).
But for hundreds of puffin young-
sters on nests above the golf course
the lightest spot on the horizon is the
town of Heimaey, so they crash land
on its streets and buildings.
And then comes the nice part. The
school children gather them up, keep
them ovemight, then release them in
the outer harbour. It’s a community
effort.
You have to like a people who do
that.

Heimaey can be reached from
Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík, by
plane or boat. It has camp
grounds, a youth hostel and hotels and
guest houses, and is a port of call for
one major cruise ship, the 250-passen-
ger Columbus Caravelle, which includes
it on two voyages this summer.
One is the Scottish Isles and Iceland
cruise, August 17 to August 28 and the
other is the Iceland/Greenland Viking
Expeditions sailing August 28 to
September 8. (For further details, con-
sult a travel agent, preferably one spe-
cializing in cruise vacations.)
The cruise stops coincide with the
puffin release period but not, unfortu-
nately, with the big independence party.
