It is in itself amazing that a
small nation is able to inter-
est such notables as listed
above. This is of course main-
ly thanks to the concert
pianist, Russian bom
Vladimir Ashkenazy, who
married an Icelandic girl,
Þórunn Jóhannsdóttir herself
a þianist. They made their
home in Iceland after
Ashkenazy could not retum
to Russia. He became an
Icelandic citizen and Mr. &
Mrs. Ashkenazy brought
their children up there. They
now reside in Switzerland.
Vladimir Ashkenazy is
one of the founders of the
Festival and he was able to
attract some of his friends to
come and perform at the first
Festival. Icelanders being an
appreciative audience has
made it easier in these latter
years to get the big names to
perform for them.
Separately, but a part of
the RAF, is the Movie
Festival, held in October. A
selection of movies from all
over the world are shown
over a period of 10 to 14
days.
For those that have the
opportunity to take in either
or both of these major arts
events, it is a worthwhile
trip.
