Help Needed 8n lceland
Would it be possible to
have published in
Lögberg-Heims-
kringla certain information
about some relatives of mine
who imigrated to Canada in
the last decade of the last cen-
tury? The reason for my
request is that the 20th of
August we are going to have a
family reunion in the old
country of my great-grandpar-
ents and we would like to see
some of our “West-Icelandic”
relatives there as well.
Valgerður Jónsdóttir, sister
of my grandfather, and her
husband, Guðjón Erlendsson,
moved from Iceland in 1987
of 1898 and settled down in
Bluff by Narrows, Manitoba.
Only a few of their children
had children of their own.
This is what I know of them:
Marinó Erlendur Guðjonsson
married in Canada, had two
children; Guðlaug (nicknamed
Lóa) married to Kristján
Alfred in Winnipeg; their son
is Stanley Alfred.
Þorbjörg (Tobba) married
to Oli Walter Olafsson, farmer
in Bluff by Narrows, their chil-
dren (havetheirnames).
Jón married a Canadian
woman - I know nothing of
their children.
Margrét (Margaret) married
Sigurður Kjartansson; their
children; Norman, Guðmund-
ur and Valgarður Jóhann.
Later she married Ólafur
Hjartarson, farmer in Steep
Rock, Manitoba.
In 1974 Guðlaug was living
at 8-519 Bumell Street, I don’t
know if it is in Gimli or
Winnipeg. She was 77 years
old when she wrote a letter to
a relative of mine from that
address. In the letter she says
that her brother Jóhann was
still alive, living at Betel in
Gimli. And this relative of
mine thinks that their sister
Margrét was a headmistress
(or whatever it’s called) in
Gimli for a while - in 1974,
when Lóa wrote the letter, she
was dead.
Anyway - could you please
make a small article out of this
and publish it? Or maybe you
know somebody that knows
about the old Icelandic people
and their descendents?
(Knowing about ancestors and
family ties is an old Icelandic
custome that I’m sure that the
old people took with them-
selves to the new country).
If you get some response
please let me know (by tele-
fax).
With best regards
Thorgrimur Gestsson

Immigrant Women
Iam presently working on a research paper looking at
Icelandic immigration to Manitoba with a focus on
the women of the Icelandic Community. I am having
a lot of difficulty finding primary sources through inter-
library loan.
I would greatly appreciate it if your newspaper could
help me or direct me to a source for this information.
